Placentia police fatally shoot man who shot them
An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by police in Placentia after firing a gun at officers on Saturday morning, officials said.
The incident happened at around 1:10 a.m., when officers saw a “suspicious occupied vehicle” parked behind a closed and vacant business in the 800 block of North Rose Drive, according to the Placentia Police Department.
As officers attempted to contact the man inside the vehicle, he shot officers, hitting the front windshield of a patrol unit and “an involved officer shot him” , the police department said.
The suspect was shot dead and police immediately began to take rescue measures, authorities said.
Paramedics transported the man to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead, officials said, adding that the identity of the suspect was withheld until his next of kin was informed.
It was not immediately clear whether the man got out of the vehicle before shooting at the officers, or how many officers fired back.
No officer was injured in the exchange of fire.
A loaded handgun was later recovered from the scene, police said.
The Placentia Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the officers involved had their body cameras activated at the time of the shooting and video footage was sent to the Orange District Attorney’s Office, which is also conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, the department said.
Further details on the suspect, the reasons why police found his parked vehicle suspicious and what led to the gunfire were not immediately available.
