Black Friday TV Deals: Why TV Prices Will Be Higher in 2021

Cheap TV deals are a staple of Black Friday sales — and every other holiday promotional event, for that matter. But in 2021, global supply chain issues are causing shortages and higher prices for a wide range of products, and televisions are no exception.

The bottom line for shoppers is that TV deals are unlikely to be as attractive as they usually are during the holidays, even at the peak of Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts.

The average price paid for a TV during the fourth quarter of 2020 was $363, according to market research firm NPD Group. For the same period in 2021, the company expects average TV prices to be around $500.

“Overall holiday prices will likely be at least $100 higher than normal” for TVs, Stephen Baker, NDP Group technology industry adviser, Money told via email. In fact, “current TV prices are the highest since at least 2012,” he said.

It’s not just supply chain issues that are driving up TV prices. For most of 2020 and into 2021, the pandemic has led Americans to spend an inordinate amount of time indoors. As a result, sales have skyrocketed for things that keep people busy while ruminating at home, like puzzles, game consoleslumber for home improvement projects and, of course, televisions.

Carssmartphones, televisions and other electronics are particularly likely to be more expensive and harder to find due to the lack of tokens which are needed in virtually all types of products that use a screen.

When to find the best TV deals

Shoppers can already find some decent sales in stores right now (see below) but experts say the lion’s share of the best deals won’t happen until Thanksgiving week.

Unlike last year, when COVID-19 kept traditional hordes of holiday shoppers from entering physical stores, in-person electronics shopping around Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday is expected to return to the normal. “In 2019, these two weeks accounted for 30%” of all consumer electronics purchases for the fourth quarter, NPD Group baker wrote recently. “Holiday 2020 has disrupted that, but consumers (and the industry) are likely to return to those old habits in 2021.”

Even with supply chain issues and chip shortages, the deals site predicts Black Friday TV prices as low as $200 for 40-49-inch models, $150 for 50-59-inch models, $360 for 60-69-inch TVs, and $478 for 70-inch ones or more.
