Bethany Brookens Named Next Associate Commissioner of CHSAA

The Colorado High School Activities Association has named Bethany Brookens to be the Association’s next Associate Commissioner.

Brookens’ appointment as Associate Commissioner was made by new CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger and will be effective immediately. A driven educator with significant experience managing large-scale events, promoting statewide activities, and nurturing relationships, Brookens has served as Deputy Commissioner of CHSAA since 2008. She will help lead the Association until the 2022-23 school year and beyond.

“I’m so honored to have been cast in this role and I’m extremely excited for this coming year and the new team,” said Brookens. “We have an incredible staff and it is a privilege to serve our members in this capacity.

Brookens has overseen many sports and activities and has served on numerous national and statewide committees, including the Colorado Tennis Association Board of Directors, the Colorado Sportswomen’s Board of Directors, the NFHS Music Advisory Committee, NFHS Volleyball Advisory Committee and others. She also serves as the Title IX and Equity Liaison for CHSAA members and holds an MBA from the University of Colorado.

“Bethany is an exceptional leader, and her influence will continue to positively impact our staff and our schools as she takes on this new role,” Krueger said. “It will be an honor to serve our members alongside him.”

In addition to boys’ and girls’ tennis, boys’ and girls’ volleyball and skiing, Brookens took over as administrator of boys’ and girls’ basketball last year. She oversaw and led the development and deployment of rSchool, the CHSAA digital platform, which included educational training and outreach. Brookens works closely with CDE, CADA, CHSCA, CASB, CASE and NFHS, as well as the League Organizing and Classification Committee (CLOC) to define registration ranges, place schools in classifications and handle calls appropriately.

Brookens serves as associate commissioner, which was vacated when former associate commissioner Tom Robinson died on April 4. She is among several others taking on new positions at CHSAA for the upcoming school year, including Krueger, Michael Book (Assistant Commissioner) John Sullivan (Assistant Commissioner).
