Sixty headteachers from the Northern region have been trained to build their capacity to manage their schools effectively.
Training should also help promote an enabling environment for teachers, parents and children to participate in school management systems.
Drawn from Savelugu, Kumbungu and Tolon districts, headteachers have been equipped with effective school leadership skills to improve learning outcomes for children across the country.
The three-day training in Tamale was part of the Partners in Play (P3) project, organized by Right To Play, a child-focused non-governmental organization.
It was funded by The LEGO Foundation and jointly implemented by Right To Play and the Department of Education and its agencies.
Mr. Solomon Kyeremah-Darko, Head of Training at Right To Play, speaking at the training, explained that: “This is a follow-up to a precedent that head teachers followed on learning through play.”
He said the highlight of the training was enabling participants to understand what it means for “children to learn through play, teachers to integrate play into lesson planning and delivery, and leaders institutions monitor and support teachers while playing. – course delivery based on performance.
It was also to help them understand the importance of professional community sessions to ensure that they run highly effective sessions in their schools to build the capacity of all teachers to implement the curriculum based on the standards, Kyeremah-Darko said.
He observed that the standards-based curriculum focused heavily on activity-based learning, saying; “That’s what Right To Play trumpeted.”
“Thus, teachers should embrace the standards-based curriculum, as well as the use of classroom activities, because when learning is fun, it increases school enrollment and increases learners’ ability to understand very concepts easily.”
Savelugu Municipal Director of Education Dr Issahaque Munawaru commended the training and said, “This is what teachers need to carry out the mandate of the Ghana Education Service which is teaching and effective learning”.
He encouraged school leaders to uphold professional conduct and behavior in schools in order to improve educational outcomes.
Mr. Mohammed Faisal, Principal of Wala D/A Primary School in Tolon District, said the training updated his knowledge on how to perform his duties effectively and will help in designing lessons to improve children’s learning.
Mrs. Vivian Mahama, Principal of Kings Primary School in Kumbungu District, said the training, apart from improving learning outcomes, reduces the workload of the teacher.
“It made our job easier because the teacher takes on the role of facilitator and since the kids are interested in more play, it reduces the work on you,” she said.
